Yes, it is true. John got in an old dark gray sedan, and invited me to ride with him. When I got in, he tried to roll his window down but it fell down; he got angry and started mumbling, but put on DRIVE and pushed the gas really hard! That was what I dreamed last night LOL. This is not that random though, I have been reading with a group from my ministry team the book “15 Invaluable laws of growth” from Maxwell (You can buy it here, awesome book), which we just finished, so I guess, that was in the back of my mind.
So let me share a quick thought about one of the laws that is a chapter in the book; the law of modeling (My own thoughs, this is not a summary of the chapter at all).
Maxwell says that “personal growth without the benefit of personal mentors could take me only so far.” Young people in general (I’m 37 and still think I am young) like me are not naturally teachable, we rather doing things OUR WAY, even if that is going to hurt, if we will have to suffer more, but we don’t want to be humble to the point where we hear what the older and more experienced dude has to say about it, I mean, we can even hear, but we are not likely to follow, we are going to stick to OUR plan. As I said that is in general. I see this everyday with my kids, they would usually come with an “absolute truth” to tell me that they have heard on tiktok, the last one that I remember was, “dad did you know that in heaven we will be able to build our own houses”. Where did that come from? Anyways you’ve got the idea. Well, I do not intend in this post to talk about the root of this attitude, maybe in another opportunity but, I have benefit in a huge way having a mentors to guide me through life. Not only in difficult times but, also when I was thriving. I have had also the opportunity to be a mentor to many people and help them alongside their quest.
Personal growth without the benefit of personal mentors could take me only so far.

Now you may ask, how does a mentor look like? A mentor is someone that is a little or a lot ahead in their journey through life, someone that you recognize success in their life either in general or in a specific area, someone that you look at and you think, “man, when I grow up I want to be like him!”.
Let me share with you three reasons why you should consider having a mentor:
1. They have been there
When you leave for a trip it is always better when you ask someone that has been there before, they will give you the tips to improve the success of your trip. That is applicable to life in general, you can save money, time, and your patience when you ask those that have been in your situation before. That could be in your emotional state, where you feel depressed, your marriage is struggling, or even when you’ve got a promotion, you can always increase your performance and effectiveness by reaching out to others.
2. You will gain a partner
God has built us for community, we can’t stay alone, it is not good for us. As you look to someone to mentor you, you will gain a partner, somebody that will be willing to hear you, and also to share his/her knowledge, experience, encouragement and come alongside you.
3. Different perspective
Everybody benefits from a different perspective. When you put a big screen on a wall and tou ask your brother to check from a distance if it is straight, or when you need to make a turn and you ask shot gun to check your blind spot. The more we can see the better decision we can make. a different perspective will increase significantly how you perform.
Wrapping it up
I know it’s not easy to expose certain areas of your life, specially those that you are not proud of, however, let me wrap this up telling you that if there is something that you are constantly wrestling with, it’s almost certain that everyone around you already noticed. Recognizing your flaws and sharing it with someone that can help you is what will take you faster and further.
